LISE JOHANSSON: COMPOSITE STRUCTURES

LISE JOHANSSON: COMPOSITE STRUCTURES

21 June – 04 August 2018

The artistic practice of Lise Johansson unfolds somewhere between the conscious and unconscious mind – it exists both in the realms of reality and fantasy.

Johansson investigates notions of authenticity and challenges the classical order and structures with which photos are usually constructed. In her studio she edits and merges different photographic elements into final compositions depicting worlds of dreams and emotions, association and longing. These sceneries hold atmospheres as light and breezy as Hockney’s pastel paintings or as gloomy as Tarkovsky’s filmic universe. They make us question not only how we perceive each other and the world, which surrounds us, but also how we connect with the self, the mind and its various inherent potentials.

In all of Johansson’s work themes of identity and belonging come up, take for example the series Hearth, where photos of doll-like humans are superimposed into environments consisting of architecture models, planning future homes to come.

This is not an illustration generated to make potential buyers relate better, this is a slightly unsettling juxtaposition, confusing us with its scale and perspective and thereby making us wonder about the unknown parts of the images. The mood is set, and like in the 50’s television anthology The Twilight Zone, we don’t quite know what eerie twists and turns are waiting for us around the corner. Johansson allows us to imagine, and in the end leaves the final interpretation open to the viewer’s own composition.

Lise Johansson (b. 1985) is from Sæby, Denmark, and currently lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark.
She is educated from The Media College Denmark in 2016, and has travelled the world extensively as part of her photographic
practice. Johansson has won several prizes, including the Sony World Photography Awards.

This exhibition showcases a selection of works aquired by one of these collectors. The show provides an interesting glimpse into the range of what fine art photograpy can be today, and how a private collection can come together over time.

TRANSFERENCE 2: JØRGEN JOHANSSON

TRANSFERENCE 2: JØRGEN JOHANSSON

10 March – 14 April 2018

In The Gallery is proud to present Transference, a show concept presenting works by the two artists Stephan Schnedler and Jørgen Johansson. The works of both artists tackle the concept of recreating a place, which may never have existed, addressing the notion of “the unsaid” and challenge the perception of the viewer.

In the late 1990’s Jørgen Johansson took his polaroid series Urban Jungle at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Two decades later he found the series in his archives. The images, which had slowly started to erode, had taken on a new visual quality. Before they disappeared entirely Johansson decided to scan the series and re-activate it in its colourful and poetic juxtapositions. By nature photography as a medium is an instant moment frozen in time – likewise these stiff and stuffed animals are positioned, as were they still out in nature living the life they left behind over a hundred years ago. Johansson’s series examines the endeavour to conserve a long gone instance, and the haunted feeling that comes through reliving it.

10 March – 14 April 2018

At first glance Stephan Schnedler’s series Unreal Reality appears to be an architectural study in light, shadow and the effect they have on a selection of modernistic rooms and surfaces. However, the images are actually depicting constructed and staged models build with simple materials such as cardboard and paper, and lit in the artist’s own studio. Schnedler elegantly plays with the viewer’s perception of space, scale and materiality, and creates an intimate atmosphere, which draws the viewer further in. With the emptiness of the depicted spaces one is led not only to consider what is in the picture but also imagine what might exist beyond the frame of the motif

Stephan Schnedler (b.1984) lives and works in Copenhagen. He was educated at the School of Photography Copenhagen in 2010. Besides the series Unreal Reality Schnedler is currently also working on the project Dancing with Gravity, where in single still-frames he captures the lightness, gravity and movement of a range of floating textiles. Transference is the debut of Stephan Schnedler’s works being publically shown in a fine arts gallery.

JACOB GILS: THE EXTENDED MOMENT

JACOB GILS: THE EXTENDED MOMENT

4 January – 3 March 2018

InTheGallery is happy to invite to the big annual solo show by Jacob Gils, our first exhibition of 2018.

The extended moment is quite an ethereal creature; something as fleeting as the photograph stretched into all dimensions. A complex, visual field of energy occurs when Gils invites the observer in for further inspection of the works. In the same way one may experience and sense a place in real life, a feeling of time, space and energy build up in the motifs – which by nature is a somewhat atypical thing in modern photography. The work both draws on traditions deeply rooted in the history of photography while also stretching into the technological and digital age.

The by now iconic style of Jacob Gils’ work has been shown world wide at exhibitions and art fairs as well as in large-scale corporations and private collections.

Once again there is a chance to experience him on home turf with his show in our space.
