SUMMER EXHIBITION 2023

SUMMER EXHIBITION

July 15 – September 16th, 2023

This year’s Summer Exhibition presents a curated selection of artworks by artists with whom the gallery has established longstanding collaborations, along with an exciting new addition. All three artists share a common theme and explore the sublime, the beautiful, and the picturesque facets of nature- and cityscapes with an ambition to evoke intense emotions and inspire awe through aesthetic and visual experiences. The exhibition portrays the powerful and omnipresent nature found in Northern Norway and Iceland, bearing the traces of old, abandoned houses as well as the dynamic ever-changing cityscapes of the vibrant metropolises – all seen through a personal lens and captured with each artist’s own distinctive approach.

Artists presented: Rune Werner Molnes, Jacob Gils and Julien Mauve.

Rune Werner Molnes (b. 1978) conveys the soul of buildings and the memory of a culture in his series “Entropy”. Each photograph is a portrait of an old, abandoned house along the coast of Northern Norway or Iceland. Some are right out depressing or melancholic, others are charming or inspirational. All with a very strong graphic appeal.

Jacob Gils (b. 1963) uncovers the beauty of various city- and naturescapes. Through his use of multiple exposures, he explores the boundaries of the photographic medium and challenges the viewer’s perception of light, space, and color. Each piece consists of a multitude of fleeting moments layered into a single image, with an almost painterly finesse.

Julien Mauve (b. 1984) creates photographic narratives in the borderland between dream and reality. His works convey a twilight mood in which the beautiful merges with the unsettling. The blue darkness disrupted by singular or mysterious light sources creates a filmic atmosphere and underlines the symbolic meaning of light as the source of life, hope, and human presence.

WINTER LIGHT 2022

December – February, 2023

As a conclusion of 2022, whilst darkness still dominates the hours of the day, In The Gallery would like to invite you in for the exhibition Winter Light.

For this edition of our winter exhibition, we would like to present works by artists whom the gallery has long-standing collaborations with as well as a few new additions. We are presenting both smaller format photographic work in combination with oil paintings, each with their intensity of color and vibrant surfaces.

All of the works are in smaller formats, with a price range to match, perfect for an end of the year gift.

Time is an ocean that ends on the beach’  Bob Dylan

Water is poetry. Sometimes hard and sharp, other times soft and elegant. Werner wandered along the coasts of Europe. Sometimes it was rough, then calm or everything in between. Yet the washing water always touched its inseparable companion: the land.

A perpetual motion of attraction and withdrawal, a flirtatious waterline. Fascinated, he looks at the water and documents what it does to people. Beaches and shores that seem to offer people time, needed to come to themselves. He immortalizes their moments of reflections.

Reflections that create subdued emotions, bring cheerful relation to life or evoke melancholy memories.

I’M NOT HERE by LISE JOHANSSON

I'M NOT HERE by LISE JOHANSSON

April 1st -April 20, 2022

Online exhibition on ARTSY – https://www.artsy.net/partner/in-the-gallery

In The Gallery is delighted to present new series “I’m not here” by Lise Johansson.

“I’m not here” is a series of self-portraits photographed in an abandoned hospital. The project is a reflection on mental illness and about identity in a state of transition.

Being in a void between the old and the new, this rite of passage is a vulnerable place. The surroundings can become fluid and one may find themself now completely reset without status or identity. What was before and what will come after?
This transition between two states of being can incite both an aching and unease to return to what one once was but often are unable to return to again.

SELECTED WORKS by JACOB GILS

SELECTED WORKS by JACOB GILS

March 5 -April 30, 2022

We are happy to present a selection of works by Danish photographer Jacob GILS from his series Mouvement and Transfer.

Jacob Gils´ photographs, equally analogue and digital in origin, embody a strong awareness of perfect technique and composition. The artist´s significant almost impressionistic style of iconic structures and sights makes his photographic works stand out with their layered production technique. The used polarisation method and multiple exposures generate engaging photographic interpretations that are organic and sensuous to the eye. Fragmented, draped and distorted they demand the onlooker to not only look at them, but also to get closer and pay more attention to the details as they never reveal themselves at a distance.

Movement is a series which combines a strong aesthetical point of view with meticulous attention to technical detail. As the title indicates, the series is concerned with giving shape to temporal and spatial aspects inherent in all visual experience.

Transfer series are polaroids transferred onto watercolour paper. Through this technique a particularly atmospheric and dreamy mood arises. Upon closer inspection, however, the eye begins to decode that in these works there are real places depicted, all with their special characteristics.
